They know what to say, which case study to send and how to handle the tough objection on the third call. Then there’s everyone else, doing their best with whatever they can find.

That gap is rarely about talent. It’s about support. Top performers have usually built their own system over time: their own notes, their own favourite slides, their own email templates. A sales enablement stack is about giving that system to the whole team.

When people hear “sales enablement stack,” they often think of software. Tools matter, but they’re only one layer. Here’s what a complete stack actually includes, and how to build it without overcomplicating things.

Layer 1: A clear understanding of the buyer

Everything else in the stack depends on this. Your team needs a shared, practical picture of who they’re selling to:

The main buyer types and what each one cares about

The problems that make them start looking for a solution

The common objections and what’s really behind them

Who else is usually involved in the decision

This doesn’t need to be a 40 page persona document. A two page summary that sales actually reads is far more useful.

Layer 2: Messaging everyone can use

Inconsistent messaging confuses buyers. One rep pitches price, another pitches speed, another pitches features. The buyer hears three different companies.

A simple messaging guide fixes that. It should cover:

How to explain what you do in one or two sentences

The main value points for each buyer type

Proof points that back up each claim

How to answer the five most common objections

The goal isn’t to script every call. It’s to give everyone a strong, consistent foundation to build on in their own words.

Layer 3: Content for every stage of the deal

This is where most teams have something, but rarely the right thing at the right time. Reps need content matched to where the buyer is:

Deal stage

What reps need

First conversation

A short overview, a relevant article or insight to share

Discovery

Questions to ask, a simple framework for diagnosing problems

Solution

Case studies or examples, a clear explanation of how you work

Proposal

Pricing explanations, ROI framing, answers to procurement questions

Closing

Implementation timeline, onboarding overview, references

If you map your current materials against this table, the gaps usually jump out. Most teams have plenty for the first conversation and very little for the proposal stage, which is exactly where deals tend to stall.

Layer 4: A place to find it all

Great content is useless if nobody can find it. If your sales materials live across shared drives, old email threads and someone’s desktop, reps will either waste time searching or send whatever they used last time.

Keep everything in one place, ideally connected to your CRM so reps can access and share content without leaving the tool they already work in. Organise it by deal stage and buyer type, not by department. And remove outdated versions, so nobody sends last year’s pricing by accident.

Layer 5: The right tools, and not too many

Tools should remove friction, not add it. The essentials for most teams are:

A CRM that tracks every contact, deal and conversation

Email templates and sequences for common follow ups

Meeting scheduling that removes back and forth

Content tracking so reps know when a prospect opened a proposal or case study

Call notes or recordings that help coaching and handoffs

Platforms like HubSpot can cover most of these in one place. Before adding any new tool, ask whether it solves a real problem your team has today, and whether people will actually use it.

Layer 6: Training and coaching that doesn’t stop

Onboarding a new rep with a week of slides and then leaving them to it is one of the most common gaps. Enablement works when learning continues:

A structured onboarding plan for the first 60 to 90 days

Regular short sessions on objection handling, new offers or market changes

Call reviews where reps learn from real conversations, good and bad

A simple way for top performers to share what’s working

Layer 7: A feedback loop between sales and marketing

This is the layer that keeps the rest of the stack alive. Sales hears what buyers ask, what convinces them and what makes them hesitate. Marketing can turn that into better content, messaging and campaigns, but only if the information actually flows back.

Set up a simple rhythm, like a monthly meeting or a shared channel, where sales flags gaps and marketing reports what they’re building. When this loop is missing, teams drift apart. We explain why that’s so costly in Why Sales and Marketing Misalignment Is Killing Your Pipeline.

How to know your sales enablement stack is working

Track a handful of signals over time:

How long new reps take to close their first deals

Win rates across the whole team, not just your top performers

How long deals spend in each stage

Which content gets used, and which content shows up in won deals

When the gap between your best and average reps starts to narrow, enablement is doing its job.

Where to start if you have nothing in place

Don’t try to build all seven layers at once. Start with the basics that make the biggest difference:

Write a one page messaging guide

Gather your best existing materials into one organised place

Fill the most obvious content gap, usually the proposal stage

Set up a monthly sales and marketing feedback session

Then build from there. If you’re not sure how much a missing system is costing you, our article on the hidden cost of not having a sales enablement program is a good place to look.

Give your whole team what top performers already have

Consistent results don’t come from hoping everyone figures it out. They come from a stack that equips every rep, at every stage, with the right message, content and tools.

Digital Friks builds sales enablement programs that connect marketing and sales, from messaging and content to HubSpot setup and training. Let’s find what’s missing in yours.

Talk to us about sales enablement

Every sales team has a few people who seem to close no matter what.
